Pallet flow racking can be useful when an operation holds multiple pallets of the same product and needs an orderly flow through storage. It is a storage-design choice, not a universal solution for ecommerce picking. A warehouse with many low-volume SKUs may need direct access more than deep storage lanes.

Do not confuse gravity flow with full automation

Gravity-flow systems use sloped roller lanes to move pallets toward the retrieval side. That movement alone does not make receiving, replenishment and retrieval fully automated. Establish which activities require operators and equipment when comparing proposals.

Loading at one end and retrieving at the other can support first-in, first-out movement within a lane. It does not automatically enforce first-expiry, first-out across the warehouse. Product status, lot selection and expiry rules still need inventory controls.

Prepare the product and throughput data

  1. List pallets held per SKU, including ordinary and peak stock levels.
  2. Record pallet dimensions, construction, load weight and product stability.
  3. Separate full-pallet moves from case or individual-unit picking.
  4. Map replenishment and retrieval workload across the shift.
  5. Ask the supplier to validate lane suitability using representative pallets and loads.
  6. Compare usable capacity, accessibility and operating cost with the current arrangement.

Count usable locations rather than theoretical density

A deep lane reserved for one SKU may contain unused positions when that SKU’s inventory falls. Mixing products can make access and rotation difficult. Include this partial-lane effect in the capacity model instead of treating every theoretical pallet position as continuously usable.

Confirm how damaged pallets, blocked lanes and equipment downtime will be handled. Layout, load ratings, installation and recovery procedures require the system supplier and qualified site specialists. This article is not an installation or maintenance instruction.

Evaluate a bounded pilot

Choose representative products, including a less-than-perfect but accepted pallet condition and a realistic replenishment pattern. Record retrieval delays, replenishment interruptions, damage and actual occupancy. Keep enough alternative capacity to maintain operations if the test does not meet its acceptance criteria.

Questions before outsourcing storage in Mexico

Do I need a particular rack system?

Usually the commercial brief should define your product, volume, rotation and handling requirements first. Ask a prospective fulfillment partner how its existing storage meets those requirements rather than prescribing equipment without a site assessment.

Does higher density guarantee lower cost?

No. Compare the complete quotation, including handling, replenishment, access limitations and the way occupied storage is measured. Equipment efficiency does not establish the price a fulfillment provider will charge.

For the broader operating framework, see our ecommerce inventory management guide. Use modular shelving alternatives when developing the next part of the workflow.
