Voice picking gives workers spoken task instructions and records their confirmations through a connected workflow. It may suit hands-busy picking tasks, but it is not a replacement for accurate locations, product identification or training. Assess it against your actual warehouse tasks rather than a vendor’s best-case productivity claim.

Confirm the workflow and system boundary

Honeywell describes voice-directed workflows that convert host-system information into spoken instructions and return worker confirmations. That describes a technology approach, not a guarantee that every WMS, language or device combination will work in your facility.

Document which system owns the task, when a pick becomes complete and how the order or tote remains identifiable. Verify the precise integration with both vendors before planning a rollout.

Test representative conditions

  1. Select a bounded area and establish a baseline for comparable orders.
  2. Test ordinary background noise, connectivity and the languages used by staff.
  3. Confirm the correct location, SKU, unit of measure and quantity in the workflow.
  4. Include short picks, damaged goods, substitutions that are not permitted and cancelled tasks.
  5. Test a device interruption and reconnection without duplicating completed work.
  6. Provide a supported alternative workflow for operators or tasks unsuited to voice.
  7. Gather operator feedback and inspect the resulting stock and order records.

Keep exceptions visible

A successful demonstration using easy orders does not prove that the system handles shortages. Workers need a clear way to report an exception without confirming a pick that did not happen. The supervisor must be able to identify the affected order and resume or reassign work safely.

Include charging, spare devices, cleaning procedures and support coverage in the operational plan. These practical requirements can change the cost and availability of the workflow.

Approve the pilot against agreed measures

Compare verified pick errors, completion time, rework and training effort for similar order mixes. Include interruptions and exception-heavy orders in the sample. Do not transfer a supplier’s advertised improvement percentage into your own business case as a measured result.

Does a fulfillment buyer need voice picking?

Not necessarily. A brand sourcing fulfillment in Mexico should define accuracy, traceability and dispatch requirements first. Ask the provider to explain how its existing picking process meets them. This article is a technology evaluation checklist and does not claim that Skynera operates a voice-picking system.

For the broader operating framework, see our ecommerce inventory management guide. Use wave release planning when developing the next part of the workflow.
