A tariff update should trigger a controlled review, not a blanket replacement of every product code. For a business moving stock between Mexico and the United States, the useful deliverable is a record showing which SKUs are affected, what evidence was checked and when an approved change enters use.

Separate a code change from a rate change

A different duty rate does not necessarily mean the product classification changed. Likewise, a supplier changing materials or product function may require a fresh classification review even when the tariff schedule has not changed. Keep these triggers separate so your team does not overwrite a valid code in response to unrelated news.

Build a change log with an owner

  1. Record the source notice, destination country, publication date and effective date.
  2. Identify potentially affected SKUs using their specifications, not just their marketing names.
  3. Ask the responsible customs specialist to document whether the code, rate or another requirement is affected.
  4. Retain the previous value alongside the approved replacement, reviewer and supporting reference.
  5. Check open purchase orders, shipments already in transit and future dispatches separately.
  6. Test one document export before applying the approved update throughout your product master.

Use the official US tariff schedule and Mexico’s SNICE classification resources as starting points. Confirm current applicability and effective dates with your customs professional; this article does not announce a specific tariff change.

Do not lose shipment history

Keep the version actually used for each shipment. Updating today’s SKU record should not silently rewrite the evidence for last month’s entry. If a previous filing may be wrong, refer it to the responsible specialist for the appropriate correction process rather than editing an archive to look consistent.

How often should classifications be reviewed?

Use event-based review for product changes, official notices and identified discrepancies, supported by a periodic risk review. A fixed quarterly check alone can miss a change that becomes relevant before the next review.

Connect the review to warehouse release

Flag affected stock and tell dispatch which documents are approved. A warehouse system can preserve that status; it does not determine legal classification. Use the SKU customs-data checklist for the underlying product record.

Plan the fulfillment handoff

Connect these controls to the Mexico–US cross-border fulfillment guide. Discuss your Mexico warehousing and dispatch requirements with Skynera and confirm the agreed responsibilities before implementation.
