A freight benchmark is useful only when the shipments being compared are genuinely comparable. A lower average rate may reflect shorter routes or smaller parcels rather than a better carrier agreement. Start with your own shipment records before buying market data or negotiating from a headline index.
For a Mexico shipping review, separate individual parcels, palletized freight and international movements. Group records by origin and destination, service level, packed dimensions, chargeable weight and handling needs. Keep outbound shipments, returns and warehouse replenishment distinguishable.
Record the quotation date, shipment date, currency and whether taxes and surcharges are included. A quote from a different period or account may not represent a rate you can obtain.
Imagine the average shipping bill rises because more customers order bulky products to distant postal codes. That does not prove a carrier increased its rates. Reprice the same representative shipment basket using the earlier and current terms, then separately measure how the order mix changed. This hypothetical analysis avoids attributing every cost increase to pricing.
External benchmarks can provide context, but their lane coverage, sample period, service scope and contract assumptions may differ from yours. Ask what the data represents. A national freight index should not be substituted for a quote on an individual customer parcel.
Protect commercially sensitive information. Use your own records, authorized market data and quotations supplied for your business rather than assuming access to competitors’ contracts.
If cost differences remain after normalization, ask the carrier to explain the relevant components. If packaging drives the difference, test the package design. If failed deliveries create repeated expense, investigate addresses and service coverage. Each finding needs a different response.
Send representative postal codes, dimensions, weights, volumes and service expectations. Ask the provider to identify exclusions and the quote’s validity. Keep the benchmark as a decision record; it is not evidence of a guaranteed saving.
