Before reducing a package to lower fulfillment costs, identify what is being measured and which charge you are reviewing. The packaged sellable unit, the inbound carton sent to a warehouse and the parcel dispatched to a customer may all have different dimensions.
This guide does not claim that Amazon has just introduced dimensional pricing or publish a universal divisor. Verify the current fee method for your marketplace, product and service. A carrier’s parcel formula should not automatically be used as an Amazon FBA fee calculation.
Record the SKU, packaging version, outer length, width, height, actual weight and measurement units. Include the packaging used at the stage being priced. Keep a photograph or other evidence showing how the measurements were taken.
Measure more than one sample if packaging varies. Flexible packaging, protruding parts or inconsistent packing can make a nominal box size a poor description of the actual shipment.
Do not promise savings until the revised package has been measured and priced under the correct method. A smaller volume can still leave the shipment in the same fee band.
Choose candidate packaging with the handling and product risks in mind. Run representative packing and transit tests, inspect the contents and document any damage. The goal is a package that protects the goods with no avoidable empty space—not the smallest package at any cost.
In a hypothetical test, a smaller carton reduces quoted transport cost but increases damage and return handling. That is not necessarily a net improvement. Compare packaging, handling, transport and exception costs together.
Do not compare one package using an old rate and another using a promotional rate without noting the difference. Avoid mixing centimeters with inches or kilograms with pounds. Keep inbound transport separate from the fee for fulfilling the final customer order.
Use the before-and-after margin review to assess the financial impact, the shipping quote comparison guide for carrier parcels, and the FBA versus merchant-fulfilled planning guide for the broader operating choice.
