A fuel surcharge is not one universal percentage across carriers and services. To reconcile a Mexico shipping invoice, identify the applicable service, effective date, percentage and amount to which that percentage is applied. Comparing the percentage alone can be misleading.

Use the carrier’s current service-specific terms

Checked on 15 September 2026, FedEx Mexico’s surcharge page distinguishes international, domestic economy and domestic express fuel information. It describes weekly adjustment mechanisms. This is a carrier-specific reference, not a rule for every carrier or your negotiated account.

Use the table and terms that apply to your shipment. Confirm which date determines the surcharge and which charges enter the calculation. Do not substitute today’s fuel price or a different country’s rate table.

Reconcile one shipment from quote to invoice

  1. Identify the carrier, account, service and shipment reference.
  2. Record the quotation and shipment dates.
  3. Retrieve the applicable surcharge schedule and preserve its effective period.
  4. Confirm the eligible charge base from the relevant terms.
  5. Recalculate the surcharge using the stated percentage and rounding rules.
  6. Compare the result with the invoice and investigate any remaining difference.
  7. Keep the quote, measurements and carrier response together.

Separate a rate difference from a base difference

In a simplified illustration, a 10% surcharge applied to an eligible charge of MXN 1,000 produces MXN 100 before other adjustments. If an invoice shows MXN 120, investigate whether the applicable base was MXN 1,200, whether a different percentage applied, or whether another charge is included. These numbers are arithmetic examples, not current carrier rates or Skynera prices.

Avoid hidden assumptions in the budget

Do not assume fuel is included because a quote shows a single total. Ask whether the amount is fixed until dispatch or can change with the schedule. Keep currency, taxes and other surcharges separate so the comparison can be reproduced.

A lower fuel percentage does not necessarily mean a cheaper shipment if the transport base or other charges are higher.

Make the commercial comparison usable

Compare complete costs for the same shipment profile and service requirement. Discuss unclear adjustments before committing volume. Where an invoice differs from agreed terms, use the carrier’s documented review process and retain evidence rather than changing inventory or fulfillment records to make the figures match.

What should a fulfillment quote clarify?

Ask who purchases the shipping label, how carrier adjustments are passed through, what evidence accompanies them and how disputes are handled. Confirm these points for the specific proposal.

For the broader operating framework, see our Mexico shipping cost comparison guide. Use like-for-like freight benchmarking when developing the next part of the workflow.
