AI-assisted inspection should be evaluated against a specific inspection task, not a general promise of faster returns. A system that recognizes visible packaging damage may not establish whether the product works, whether all parts are present or whether it is safe to resell.

Define the inspection question

Select one product family and one observable condition. Establish a written grading standard with examples of acceptable, unacceptable and uncertain cases. Record image angle, lighting and capture requirements so the pilot does not mistake inconsistent photography for a product defect.

Prepare a supervised test

  1. Build a labeled sample reviewed by people qualified for the product.
  2. Include rare defects, incomplete packaging and difficult images, not only clean examples.
  3. Keep evaluation examples separate from material used to configure the system.
  4. Compare the model’s recommendation with the reviewed decision.
  5. Route low-confidence and unfamiliar cases to manual inspection.
  6. Retain the evidence and model version for each tested decision.

Measure both kinds of error

A false rejection adds inspection work or delays recovery. A false acceptance can place an unsuitable item into sellable inventory. Report these separately by defect type. An overall accuracy figure can hide a serious failure on an uncommon but important condition.

Include image-capture time, rechecks and exception handling in the processing-time comparison. Faster prediction alone is not a faster end-to-end return. Do not use the system to remove required product testing or qualified safety review.

When should the pilot stop?

Define stop conditions before rollout: unexplained false accepts, poor images, missing product identity or a product revision outside the tested scope. Preserve the manual workflow so staff can keep working safely while the issue is investigated.

Connect inspection to controlled disposition

The model can recommend a queue; an authorized process must still determine restocking or further work. Use the refurbishment approval gates to keep inspection evidence attached to the physical item. Confirm any provider’s actual inspection capabilities rather than assuming AI functionality is included in fulfillment.

Plan the fulfillment handoff

Connect these controls to the ecommerce returns workflow. Discuss your returns handling requirements with Skynera and confirm the agreed responsibilities before implementation.
